Understanding Kenya's Needs
Over 100,000 children a day are orphaned in Africa due to the AIDs pandemic. Statistics in Kenya indicate that up to 3 out of every 10 adults have HIV/AIDS. Nine year olds are caring for younger siblings. Four year olds are going out alone to look for food. In many areas, drinking water is not safe and sanitation systems are uncontrolled. Over 58% of Kenya’s population is living below $2/day, with some areas experiencing 70% unemployment.
The Kenyan government, national, and international NGOs are working to turn this crisis around, but for Kenyans the immediate situation is desperate and discouraging. Individuals, families, and communities would like to build their capacity on a personal and local level toward self-sufficiency. More and more, smaller partnerships are forming between US based and developing country communities, often through businesses, groups, and individuals. This is why LifeMoxie! and our partners have chosen to begin our global mission with Kenya.
April's Connection to Kenya
April and her husband Randy, have known their native Kenyan friends for years. Francis and Florence Ranagwa have stepped out with Moxie to start a church, two schools, and an orphanage. They are seeking to spread the contagious attitude of hope and Moxie to the women, children and men within the local communities.
Their community development projects have included:
- Medical Clinics at Shangilia Orphanage for the children and local villagers
- A Library Project for King’s Highway School
- A Clean Water Project for the Orphanage
- Micro Business Enterprise
