Career Closet:

Career Closet is a volunteer-based non-profit organization that empowers economically disadvantaged women by providing suitable clothing and other services to ensure success in gaining and retaining employment, to enhance careers, and to improve family stability.  We are committed to the success of women who are seeking employment and those who strive for advancement.

Our programs prepare women to interview and enter the workforce with a professional appearance and confident attitude.  We accomplish this by providing contemporary and appropriate clothing and by coaching them about interview techniques and presentation advice.  All clothing and services are provided to the client free of charge.

Career Closet in Santa Clara opened in 1992 and Career Closet in San Mateo opened in 2001. We have served approximately 17,000 women since Career Closet opened its doors. We work with over 70 social service agencies throughout San Mateo County and Santa Clara Counties. We work with governmental agencies, private charities, and other low- income service providers.

Break-Out #1

Financial Planning 101

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. Whether you are beginning a journey whose goal is the attainment of financial independence, or you are on the journey and need to see if you are on track, this workshop is exactly for you. The contents of this presentation are designed to create a dialogue with the audience to address questions about financial planning, engage in a brief discussion about the six areas of financial planning and how to initiate a process of identifying your goals, prioritizing your resources and requirements, and making certain you are not in the ninety five percent of Americans who do not retire in financial dignity! We will cover your questions around cash reserves and cash management, insurance, investments, taxes, retirement and estate planning!

Increasing Your Self-Worth, Value and Bottom Line

Join us to explore how our perceptions of our value influence our earning potential. This session is designed to help you create abundant income by enabling you to gain others' appreciation for your true value. The laws of attraction—how you perceive and project yourself in the world through your thoughts, voice and behavior—will be revealed.

By exploring how you perceive your own value and self-worth in the world, you will gain greater awareness of the messages you often send to others unconsciously and specific strategies you can follow to project a greater self-worth and improve your earning power.

 

Creating a Life Worth Living

How do you turn a vague yearning into a specific idea into a concrete plan? This workshop will explore the process of moving from abstraction into action and look at the ways this creative process is essential to all entrepreneurial ventures. Participants will be excited to expand on their farfetched visions and build a small model for real life, using exercises, discussion, and group brainstorming. Break out of the old thinking conceptual molds and challenge yourself to really investigate what it would mean to build a career around your dreams.

How to Turn ‘No’ Into ‘Yes!’ – Sales Strategies for Every Area of Your Life

This skillshop will be an interactive discussion on the common ‘no’s’ people receive in every day life – job, pay raise, getting an appointment, no response, rejected business, negative feedback from others, or trying to influence important people in your life.

Elinor will share her success in turning negative beginnings into positive ends by means of relationship building.  Attendees will be able to share uncertain situations and engage in brainstorming ideas to resolve issues.  Be prepared to learn new creative ideas on how to make a positive impact on others!

In this workshop, Carol McClelland, Ph.D and Rebecca Kieler show you how to turn your procrastination into action, encourage you to envision new career possibilities, and help you articulate your definition of success. Your newfound perspective will help you discover careers that compliment your values and your lifestyle.

Planning with Heart, Head and Spirit – Using The One-Page Business Plan to Make Your Vision a Reality

Your vision and dreams propel you forward. Now you need a track to run on. The One Page Plan provides the planning, tracking and accountability system that helps you create business-overview and marketing plans in a fraction of the normal time. In the skillshop you will learn how to use this extremely simple paper or CD system. It will help you jump-start your success by incorporating your head, heart and spirit into the practical action steps necessary for starting or running a business or consulting practice.

Your Moat – the Most Important Part of Your Castle

No matter how disciplined we are at accounting wealth, it can all disappear in an instant if we are not properly protected. This session will examine how the protection element so wealth management can be coordinated with accumulation strategies to help ensure that financial goals are met regardless of unforeseen circumstances. Attendees with learn to consider when making decisions about auto, home, liability, medical, life, disability, and long-term care insurance as well as an overview of wills, trusts, and emergency savings needs.

Investing – Make Your Money Work For You!

Explore how the various retirement vehicles including, but not limited to, 401(k)s, Roth IRAs, SEPs and Annuities operate.  Get information to help you decide which are appropriate for you as well as investing pitfalls to avoide while planning for your retirement.  Learn how to make decisions according to a time tested and systematic method of investing.  This workshop is ideal for women still saving and investing toward retirement.

Running Your Own Business – Taxes and Legal

Running your own business requires you to understand self-employment taxes, retirement benefits, legal structure and legal liabilities. Tax and legal questions are necessary parts of structuring and operating a successful business. You want to do it right the first time. This workshop is perfect for women who are or want to start a business or become self-employed. Join two successful women who are running their own business as you learn how to proactively manage these crucial aspects of your business and become prepared for the inevitable legal and tax issues that will come up along the way.

 

Budgeting - Wanting the Porsche but Living with the Toyota

We all make choices in our lives...our careers, the places that we live, how much we save, and where we spend our money.  No matter what our desires.....whether it's the American Dream with a nice house, 2 cars and 2.2 kids or something a bit more cosmopolitan like an apartment in Manhattan....reaching them will require us to make money and budget it for the lifestyle we choose.  We will play a fun and interactive game for you to practice budgeting.  Pick a career, a house, a car, and a lifestyle and learn how to balance your income, savings, and living expenses.  Join us to get a taste of reality in this exciting game about budgeting.
