Dear Ann,
Fight or flight - our inborn, "pre-wired" response for dealing
with dangerous situations. This neurological response protects us from
any perceived threat. But this crazy economy has people so afraid
that they can't muster up a fight or a flight. And so we
now have a population that has taken on another response: freeze.
People seem paralyzed, waiting to see what the economy will do, waiting
for their phone to ring, waiting to see what their bosses and clients
will do, waiting for something to happen - good or bad. Working
with leaders in corporate America has never felt more like the movie
The Sixth Sense. I feel like that little boy who sees dead people. I
see people shuffling down hallways like walking zombies. And once in a
while I hear someone's name called over a loud speaker and a wide-eyed
man will rise from the cubes and head to his boss' office in his own
rendition of Dead Man Walking. In this issue of Moxie Moments we look at ways you can unfreeze yourself and your people. |

One
of the biggest contributing factors to complacency is group conformity.
It is an innate human tendency to look to the "group" as we form our
opinions and behaviors. But now we're looking at a group of people who
are stuck in freeze mode. They will gladly share with you how the sky
is falling and point to many examples to prove their point. All you
will get from looking at the group is magnified fear. Here's a suggestion to combat group conformity:

As a leader, you have had
experience dealing with fright and flight responses from your people,
but leading a group of people in freeze mode requires a whole different
set of leadership skills. The most frustrating part of the freeze
response is that it is now, in these crazy economic times, when you
most need your people to generate movement - movement in their
thoughts, ideas, and actions. You don't have time for walking zombies.
You need movers and shakers. Here's a suggestion to generate some movement when faced with a group of people who are paralyzed:

Chase, Bezos &
du Toit
Let's
meet 3 people from our "Top 25 People to Watch in 2009" who continue to
show us how to move forward in spite of their circumstances. 1. William Chase, a potato farmer who refused to accept the word "no" when his ideas for French Fries were rejected

2. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, whose innovative thinking brought us the Kindle in the midst of declining online sales and a crowd of naysayers

3. Natalie du Toit, the first amputee swimmer to ever win an Olympic Gold Medal
