5 Cs to Date my Mom or Thrive in 2008!
by Ann Tardy
My dad passed away shortly after
celebrating 38 years of marriage to my mom. He left a young (only 60!)
good-looking, professional, smart, businesswoman who would make a great
partner for any guy who could keep up with her!
I convinced my mom to start dating again. We got her on match.com and eHarmony and other dating services; but when she started bringing home losers, it was time to institute some ground rules.
These
ground rules will work well whether you want to date my mom, find your
own relationship (raise the bar, people!), or thrive in your career or
business in 2008!
C-Confidence
for my mom:
She had to date guys who were confident about themselves. How could she
be confident about a guy who wasn't confident about himself?
for you:
Be confident, even if you have to "act as if" you're confident until
you can catch up. People are attracted to confident people.
C-Curiosity
for my mom:
She had to look for guys who were curious about her and the
world. I was shocked at how many of her dates spent hours on end
talking about themselves, never asking her a question. Or the ones who
didn't want to see the world; they were content just going to the same
restaurant every night.
for you:
Be curious about other people and the world. Doors of opportunity will
open for you when you approach each day, person, and situation with
wonder, excitement and possibility.
C-Connection
for my mom:
When she didn't have anything in common with a guy, her energy and
excitement for him dwindled quickly. She needed to share an
interest with him and stop dating a guy just because she didn't want to
hurt his feelings.
for you:
Stop wasting time on things (and people) that don't serve or promote
your goals and your interests. Litmus test your activities against your
goals this year and then start saying "No, thank you, I'm going to
pass."
C-Commitment
for my mom:
She had to fing guys who could commit. Life's too short to
waste it on people who couldn't even commit to a date on Saturday night.
for you: Stop tolerating excuses from yourself and others. Commit to something and then bring your A-game and make it happen this year.
C-Cash
for my mom: She had to find guys that can carry their own weight. My mom works too hard to be some guy's purse.
for you:
Money makes the world go round, or at least a lot things possible,
including the freedom to have adventures, change careers, start a
business, take vacations, make a difference in the world. Don't lose
sight of the cash.
